The Trump administration just asked OpenAI to limit the release of GPT-5.6 to select government-approved partners before any wider launch — citing security concerns stemming from the model’s capabilities, The Information reports. Under the staggered rollout, OpenAI will preview the model to a small group of partners, with the government approving access “customer by customer.”

The reason? The soaring price of memory.
IBM unveiled the world's first sub-1 nanometer chip, built for the AI era. A new 3D architecture called nanostack packs nearly 100 billion transistors onto silicon the size of a fingernail. The chip fits the fast memory that big AI models constantly pull from into 40% less space. Against its 2 nm chip, the node offers up to 50% more performance or 70% better energy efficiency.
Pope Leo XIV posted the warning, framing the design of AI as a moral act because of how systems classify people. He said ethical judgement must reach into how a system is designed, long before anyone picks a use for it. For AI to respect human dignity, he added, it must be possible to name who justifies a decision and repairs the harm it causes.
AI is coming for legacy products, too. Productivity company Notion is shutting down its email product, Notion Mail, on September 22. The company is discontinuing the email inbox in favor of its AI agent offering after it noticed users increasingly handing over their email to the agents and not opening the inbox at all.
